Canines and felines may not be thought to be the most compatible of animals, but statistics show otherwise. As a matter of record, there is a survey recorded in the American Veterinary Medical Association back in 2002 that shows that over 15% of every home in the United States has at least one dog or one cat.
This census also stated that almost 50% of each animal owner had both a cat and a dog under the same roof. This means that out of the entire nation, almost 9 million cats and dogs are sharing a home.
It’s Not A Paradise
Do not let these numbers trick you into thinking that every family that has both a cat and a dog does not have their share of problems. Many behavior experts take on situations that have problems which stem from issues between the family kitty and the family dog.
It is not often that the dog ends up with fear and anxiety due to their build. There are very many people that allow their cats to live terrified of f the dog. They tend to spend a lot of their time hiding out in the garage or other areas of the home away from the aggressive dog. This can lead to chronic illness for the cat.
These problems can be easily dealt with a studious assessment of each pet’s personality and then a step-by-step careful introduction between the two.
Questions To Consider
Which of your two animals is thought to be the primary resident, who was first, the cat or the dog? Was this animal ever around other species before? If so how did it go? Even if the meeting went well in the past, this does not that you will see the same outcome. Your new animal may behave and act differently than your previous one.
What about the new canine or feline you are thinking of bringing into the home, does it have a history of friendliness towards different types of animals? It is always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to your cat. It’s best to assume that your dog has potential to injure the animal. This caution should be taken even if the new dog is said to have been friendly with other cats in the past.
