When the dog digging is out of control, it’s difficult to stay calm. After all, just because you own a dog, it doesn’t mean that you don’t want to enjoy your garden or have a yard that is free of holes. The problem is that some dogs simply feel that it is within their right to tear up any open space that they can find.
Before dog digging starts to get the better of you, there are some important tricks you should learn. Give your dog lots of love and attention every single day to relieve any sensation of solitude or tedium, and play lots of fun games together. Be certain that even when you’re not there, you have left toys out for your dog’s entertainment.
If it isn’t loneliness or boredom, you might find that your dog is digging for a purpose, such as to investigate the other side of a fence. Many things could be attracting your dog, such as children, food, or activities and smells on the other side of the fence. In order to put fence digging to a halt, lay out bricks to cover up the ground where the behavior is likely to occur.
If you’re finding holes all over your yard and in no specific pattern, then the dog digging may be a result of too much energy. Burn off the excess energy by giving your dog more frequent or long or longer walks. If that’s not enough, add some high-energy playtime including fetch, Frisbee, or other games that involve a lot of running and jumping.
Of course, it’s always a good idea to make the dog digging locations as unappealing as possible, so sprinkle them with cayenne or red pepper, and make a loud noise every time your dog seems inclined to dig in them. Even a quick shot from a squirt bottle may be enough to make dog digging an unpleasant behavior for your dog, too.
